In 2018, Komati Fruit Nurseries decided to invest in a brand new sterile nursery where they could produce citrus seedlings free of citrus greening and other diseases. Together with Vegtech Netafim, they embarked on a journey to create a state-of-the-art nursery that would reduce seedling mortality rates and decrease seed-to-tree turnaround time.
Over a two year period, our team conceptualised the new nursery. Extensive work went into determining a) the perfect location for the nursery and b) how best to integrate the cultivation areas with the rest of the facility to create the sterile environment needed. In 2019, with all the puzzle pieces in place, we broke ground and started the foundation works. Our team faced several challenges in the construction phase, including hard rock excavation, torrential downpours and sweltering heat, as well as Covid-19 construction delays. But despite these obstacles, we successfully completed the project in 2020 – and it wasn’t long before the first seedlings started germinating in the new nursery.
